Once Lord Ganesha while riding on Mouse (Mushaka), skidded in a hurry which amused the Moon and laughed at Lord Ganesha. The irritated Ganesha cursed the moon that no one would see him, and if anyone sighting the Moon, would be charged with theft. The Moon, sensing the debacle surrendered to Lord Ganesha and prayed for the mercy. The Lord Ganesha toned down the effect of the curse to once in a year and said no one should view moon on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi (Bhadrapad Shukla Chaturthi as per Hindu Panchang).
